Textile Recycling with Bio4MatPro for Sustainable Fashion
“Fast fashion”, i.e. the production and purchase of many very cheaply produced items of clothing, is a trend that leads to a lot of waste.
Recycling textiles well is an important contribution to making the industry more sustainable. One bio-based solution is the use of enzymes. Enzymes are important tools for a sustainable bioeconomy.
They are specialized proteins that are found in all living organisms, where they take on very different, important functions.
Enzymes that are particularly interesting for recycling materials are found in microorganisms. For example, some can break down large, stable molecules and thus degrade the fibers of textiles.
This overview video provides an insight into the scientific research and development activities of the Bio4MatPro Competence Center and presents an application example from the Bio4MatPro project EnzyDegTex. The video is only available in German.

WDR Lokalzeit Reports on Bio4MatPro
On October 6, 2022, a WDR television team accompanied the kick-off event of the Bio4MatPro Competence Center. The competence center was presented in a report by WDR Lokalzeit. The report highlights the objectives, the various research and development topics and the significance for the biological transformation in the region.

Kick-Off Event of the BMBF Research Network “Modellregion Bioökonomie im Rheinischen Revier"
The kick-off event of the research network “Modellregion Bioökonomie im Rheinischen Revier” took place on March 31, 2022 at Indemann in the district of Düren.
Over the next five years, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will use funds from the Structural Strengthening Act to support research and innovation to establish a model bioeconomy region in the former Rhenish Mining Area.
In the context of sustainable structural change, innovative value chains and business models are to be created in the former Rhenish Mining Area that will drive the creation of new, future-oriented jobs. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is therefore investing 72 million euros in the first funding phase of the research network “Modellregion Bioökonomie im Rheinischen Revier”.
The funded projects include the two flagships, the Competence Center Bio4MatPro and the Innovationscluster BioökonomieREVIER, that provide clear impetus for transformative development. At the same time, the accompanying project "Bioökonomie Verstehen.Verbinden.Unterstützen" investigates the success factors for the successful transformation process.
In total, more than 60 partners from academia and industry are involved in realizing the vision.
