Textile Recycling with Bio4MatPro for Sustainable Fashion
“Fast fashion”—that is, the production and purchase of large quantities of very cheaply produced clothing—is a trend that leads to excessive waste.
Effectively recycling textiles is a key step toward making the industry more sustainable. One bio-based approach involves the use of enzymes. Enzymes are essential tools for a sustainable bioeconomy.
They are specialized proteins found in all living organisms, where they perform a wide variety of important functions.
Enzymes of particular interest for material recycling are found especially in microorganisms. Some, for example, can break down large, stable molecules and thus degrade textile fibers.
This overview video provides insight into the scientific research and development activities of the Bio4MatPro Competence Center and presents an application example from the Bio4MatPro project EnzyDegTex.
